What is Biochar?

Biochar is a natural soil booster made by heating organic matter in a low-oxygen environment (pyrolysis). This process turns organic waste into a lightweight, sponge-like charcoal that helps soil hold water, store nutrients, support beneficial microbes, and reduce carbon in the atmosphere, all while being 100% organic.

Silvachar's Biochar is proudly produced in Salmon Arm, BC, using a 100% organic process with no added fuels or chemicals

Biochar structure

Biochar has a honeycomb-like structure full of tiny pores. When you mix it with compost, manure, or fertilizer before adding it to your soil, those pores get “charged” with nutrients and beneficial microbes.

This creates the perfect home for soil life and gives your plants steady access to water and nutrients right where they need it. Healthier soil, stronger plants, less waste.

  • Biochar is an ancient tool

"Biochar is found in soils around the world as a result of vegetation fires and historic soil management practices. Intensive study of biochar-rich dark earths in the Amazon has led to a wider appreciation of biochar’s unique properties as a soil enhancer."

    International Biochar Initiative (IBI)

  • Biochar improves soil fertility

"Biochar improves soil fertility and benefits plant growth, while also offering a way to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere."

    Cornell University News

    November 2023

  • Most important initiative

"Biochar may represent the single most important initiative for humanity’s environmental future."
